On the road again โฆ
The last longer road trip was only a bit more that a half a year ago, and now already the next one. How lucky am I?
When a son asks you to join him for a road trip after his semester, how could anyone say no!
So he chose to check out the southeast, starting from his college in Upstate New York. On his way down he picked me up at Dulles Airport, Washington DC (actually Virginia). From there we did a big loop around the southeast until he would drop me again at the same place, then heading back to New York before staying at home over the Summer.
The entire loop from DC around the southeast, all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico and back again was roughly 3800 miles or 6080 km.
Washington DC, Virginia & North Carolina
We started with a night visit to the Mall in DC, a special trait. Then we began our trip moving south, visiting Revolutionary War sites at Yorktown and Williamsburg, on to Kill Devils Hill, NC to see the site of the first flight of the Wright Brothers.
The Deep South
Rolling on southwards, we made an almost mandatory stop at New Bern, NC before driving into the Deep South with visiting Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA, both beautiful colonial cities with their special charme. Afterwards heading west into Alabama ย all the way down to Mobile on the Gulf of Mexico and of course the capital Montgomery.
Nashville & the Lower Appalachians
The music capital Nashville was a special treat, so nice to see how it emerged from the last time I saw it almost 40 years ago. And then came the beautiful drive, partially on the Blue Ride Parkway, more or less along the Appalachians, hitting The Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah N.P, West Virginia back country, its capital Charleston all the way back again to DC.
